Tiempo Climático - the Weather

Los británicos se quejan del tiempo constantemente, son famosos por ello. Ellos mismos piensan que éste es el rasgo que mejor define “the English”.

¡Si alguna vez vais a Inglaterra, aseguraros de haceros con un buen número de expresiones relacionadas con el tiempo para que podáis charlar con esta gente obsesionada con el clima!

En esta conversación empezamos hablando de POR QUÉ los ingleses hablan tanto del tiempo.

Seguimos con una historia cultural del tiempo y el control del tiempo. Aprenderéis por qué los finlandeses no son bienvenidos en los barcos, y qué solían vender en bolsas a los marineros las brujas escandinavas.

Luego hablamos de los diferentes tipos de tiempo (así que aprenderéis un montón de vocabulario útil sobre el tiempo en inglés), y de las diferencias culturales en actitudes respecto al tiempo: por qué a alguna gente le gusta la lluvia y otros se quejan de ella todo el tiempo.

Luego averiguaréis cuál es el lugar de la Tierra donde más llueve (una pista: es un lugar en Latinoamérica que empieza por ‘C’), y cuáles son los sitios más secos, calurosos, ventosos y fríos.

Luego hacemos un juego de rol improvisado donde aprenderéis expresiones útiles e importantes para hablar del tiempo en inglés, y acabamos hablando de qué va a pasar con el clima mundial en el futuro.

El podcast acaba como siempre con una clase de vocabulario de 5 minutos que os enseñará fantásticas expresiones coloquiales para hablar del tiempo y el clima en inglés.

TOM: We’re back on Bogatell beach[1] during La Merced[2] festival in Barcelona, and it’s a beautiful sunny[3] day and it’s quite windy[4] as well, isn’t it? So we hope it doesn’t distract[5] you too much…
MARK: Yeah, there’s definitely a strong breeze[6] coming off the sea…
TOM: And that leads us on to today’s topic: the weather. Now, talking about the weather, along with sarcasm and ‘an ability to queue[7]‘ have been found to be the traits[8] which many people believe define the British. And in fact they did a survey[9] of five thousand British people a couple of years ago, and talking about the weather was the number one British trait. It’s used as an ‘ice breaker[10]‘ or a ‘filler[11]‘ for a lull[12] in conversation between people, and easy ‘small talk[13]‘. Now you were saying before we recorded, Mark, that whenever you talk to your parents, one of the first things they say is “how’s the weather?” or…
MARK: Yeah…
TOM: …they tell you about the weather…
MARK: Yeah always! After the initial conversation, “Hello, how are you? How are things? Everything OK?” they’ll always give me a commentary about the weather in the UK; it’s either pouring with rain[14], or it’s been lovely and sunny and the flowers are out in the garden, and asking what it’s like in Barcelona, but for six months of the year I just say, “Mum, it’s April, May, August [Tom laughs], whatever and I live in Spain”, so she’s like “Oh yeah, of course; it’s sunny”…

British people constantly talk about the weather, they’re famous for it. English people themselves believe it’s the main trait that defines “the English”. If you ever go to England, make sure you are well armed with a number of weather-related expressions so you can make small talk with the weather obsessed population!

In this English conversation we begin by talking about WHY the English talk about the weather so much.
We follow this with a cultural history of the weather and weather control. You’ll learn why Finnish people weren’t welcomed on boats, and what Scandinavian witches used to sell to sailors in bags.

We then discuss types of weather (so you’ll learn lots of useful English weather vocabulary), as well as the cultural differences in attitudes towards weather – why some people love rain and others moan about it all the time.

Next you’ll learn where the rainiest place on earth is (a clue: it’s somewhere in Latin America beginning with ‘C’), as well as where the driest, hottest, windiest and coldest places are.

We then do an unplanned roll-play where you’ll learn some useful and important expressions to discuss the weather in English, and we finish off by talking about what’s going to happen to the global weather in the future.

The podcast finishes as usual with a 5 minute English vocabulary class which will teach you some fantastic colloquial expressions to talk about weather and climate in English.

Educación en inglaterra: Eton

Empezamos este podcast con la historia de la educación a través de los años, desde las sociedades pre-alfabetización (antes de la invención de la escritura), hasta los tiempos modernos.

Luego os damos una visión general sobre las escuelas en Inglaterra y los diferentes tipos que hay, la diferencia entre escuelas públicas y privadas, y el coste de llevar a tus hijos a las mejores (y más caras) escuelas de Inglaterra, como “Eton college“.

TOM: Hello Mark! Today we’re sitting in Ciudadella Park, again, in Barcelona, surrounded[1] by the noisy parrots[2] that you might be able to hear all around us…
MARK: Again…
TOM: Again. Uh…I think they’re fighting[3] over something. Today we’re gonna talk all about education. Now, education in this sense…uhh…the, the sense that we’re gonna talk about is “the process by which a society deliberately[4] transmits its accumulated knowledge[5], skills[6] and values from one generation to another”. So let’s talk a little bit about the history of education first. Uh…how, how were people first educated?
MARK: By imitation. In pre…prehistoric societies the, the younger generation would watch what the adults did and copy; so for example, hunting[7], fire making[8], things like that, like literally ‘watch and learn[9]’…
TOM: Yeah, so it’s kind of specialist skills taught orally[10] as well, wasn’t it? So they didn’t write anything down[11], and then at about three thousand five hundred B.C. so over five thousand yewers…years ago when writing was invented, it meant that they could record stories[12] and beliefs[13] and poetry[14] and so on and…and customs[15] and pass them on[16] in a written way. Uh… some of the earliest universities; do you know what they are?
MARK: Uhh….
TOM: You do cos I told you! [Tom laughs]

Sobre la Conversación en inglés…

We begin this English podcast with a look at the history of education through the ages from pre-literate societies (before the invention of writing), until modern times.

We then give an overview of school in England, and talk specifically about the different types of school in England, the difference between private and government schools, and talk about the cost of sending your children to the best (and most expensive) schools in England – like Eton college.

The conversation then moves onto English universities, many of which have a well deserved world-wide reputation: like Oxford & Cambridge universities. We discuss the different qualifications people do at university, including postgraduate qualifications.

Los dos conocemos Londres muy bien… Yo viví en Londres durante doce años, y Mark nació en Londres y vivió allí toda su vida hasta que se marchó a Australia en 2002.

MARK: Hi Tom!
TOM: We’re back in Turó Park in Barcelona, and there are two children…uh…letting off[1] fireworks[2] in the park, so if there’s a big bang[3] that’s what it is, so please try and ignore it. Today we’re gonna talk all about London…
MARK: Ah, good old London…
TOM: Yes, our favourite city in the world, or perhaps not. Anyway why…what do we know about London?
MARK: We know quite a lot; Umm…I was born there, and lived there for a large number of years, I won’t say how many, and I believe you spent[4] twelve or thirteen years living in London yourself…
TOM: Twelve years, yes, I went there to London University and I spent twelve years there; for five as a student and then I worked there for six or seven years, so we know a lot about London, but we both left! So, can you tell us a little bit about the history of London? And …uhh…maybe some stats[5] and facts…
MARK: It’s a very, very old city, going back nearly two thousand years; it was founded in A.D. 43 as a Roman settlement[7] and comprised the City of London[8] and the City of Westminster[9] after that. So more or less it’s two cities in one, which may help to explain why it’s such a big place today…

This English conversation is all about London, the capital of England and along with New York & Tokyo, one of the three main financial centres in the world. We both know London well… I lived in London for twelve years, and Mark was born in London and lived there all his life – until he left for Australia in 2002.

We begin the chat with a brief history of London, followed by a look at some facts and statistics about London.
We then talk about London’s rich culture. With 300 different languages spoken there, and 40% of its inhabitants foreign-born, it’s viewed (quite rightly) by many as the multi-cultural capital of the world. En este podcast Mark y yo conversamos sobre fumar tabaco. Si os interesa aprender el inglés necesario para hablar sobre fumar otras cosas, os interesará nuestro podcast sobre Alcohol y Drogas.

Esta conversación empieza con una visión sobre la historia del tabaco a través de los años, ¡que se remonta a unos 7.000 años atrás! Luego hablamos de las estadísticas mundiales sobre el tabaco antes de centrarnos en España, el Reino Unido y América Latina. También veremos qué país de habla hispana en Europa occidental tiene el mayor número de fumadores, y que el porcentaje de médicos que fuman en ese país es considerablemente mayor que la proporción de fumadores entre la población del Reino Unido en general.

Luego hablamos de las diferentes maneras en que fumar afecta a la salud, y a continuación de sus costes económicos y medioambientales, varias leyes sobre el tabaco en el mundo y cómo están cambiando, y dejar de fumar (Tom lo ha conseguido por fin pero Mark todavía está a veces “smoking like a chimney”!).

TOM: OK, and today we’re gonna talk all about smoking, but smoking tobacco, we talked about cannabis in another podcast; today is all about tobacco, so a billion people smoke tobacco or a third of the adults in the world, it’s obviously a very popular pastime or habit , isn’t it?
MARK: Yep, seems so…
TOM: And through the years the intake[6] of nicotine, the drug from tobacco, has come in various forms…uh…in the 18th century it was snuff[8], that you stuck up your nose[9], and then cigars, and then cigarettes in the 20th century became popular and also other means of smoking tobacco are: pipes, including chillums[10], hookahs[11] and bongs[12]. Have you ever used a bong to smoke tobacco?
MARK: No, not tobacco…

In this English podcast Mark & I have a conversation about smoking tobacco. If you’re interested in learning the English necessary to talk about smoking other things, you may be interested in our Alcohol y Drogas podcast here.

This English conversation begins with a look at the history of smoking through the ages, beginning 7,000 or more years ago! We then talk about world smoking statistics before focussing on Spain, the UK and Latin America. We also talk about which Spanish speaking country has the highest level of smokers in Western Europe, and the fact that the percentage of doctors who smoke in that particular country is significantly higher than the proportion of smokers in the general population in the UK.

We then talk about the various ways smoking affects health, followed by a look at the economic and environmental costs of smoking, various smoking laws around the world and how they’re changing, and giving up smoking (Tom has finally succeeded but mark is still sometimes “smoking like a chimney”!).

We finish by asking how Spain (and Mark) are going to cope with the smoking ban scheduled for Jan 1st 2011, and what exactly the future holds for smoking in general.

Medioambiente y ecologismo en inglés

En esta conversación en inglés, grabada en la playa del Bogatell en Barcelona, España, hablamos del ecologismo, también conocido como “The Green Movement” en inglés.

Primero vemos la historia de la concienciación sobre el medio ambiente: cuándo los humanos empezaron a preocuparse activamente por el medio, qué país de Europa tuvo el primer problema de contaminación grave (y por qué), y el auge de tres movimientos ecologistas famosos: Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth y el movimiento Chipko en la India, también conocido como “Tree Huggers” (que se traduce como “los que abrazan a los árboles”)

MARK: Environmentalism or, A.K.A.[3], The Green Movement[4]…
TOM: Exactly! Now environmentalism is “a broad[5] philosophy and social movement regarding concerns for environmental conservation, and improvement of the state of[6] the environment in order to protect it from damage by human activities”. And what’s someone who speaks out[7] about environmental issues called?
MARK: An activist…
TOM: Or an Environmentalist[8]. Interestingly, ‘mentalist’ has a slang[9] connotation; what’s a ‘mentalist’?
MARK: [Mark laughs] Someone who’s insane[10] or crazy[11]…
TOM: Exactly, but they’re not insane or crazy, but uh…anyway, let’s move on. Can we talk about the history of environmental awareness[12]? When did it begin, when did people first become concerned about environmental issues?
MARK: It’s actually been going on in various forms for thousands of years, but the first recognised environmental movement came from Arabic medical texts around the 8th to 13th century in what was known as the ‘Arab Agricultural Revolution[13]‘…

In this English conversation, recorded on Bogatell beach in Barcelona, Spain, we discuss environmentalism – also known as “The Green Movement” in English.

First we look at the history of environmental awareness – when humans first began actively caring for their environment, which country in Europe had the first serious environmental pollution (and why), and the rise of three famous environmental movements – Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Chipko movement in India – also known as “Tree Huggers”.

We then discuss global warming including the causes, the Green House Effect, deforestation (with a focus on the Amazon), and what measures are being taken to combat global warming. We also reveal the worst polluting countries in the world.

Finally we talk about alternative movements, what our “Carbon Footprint” is all about, sustainable living, what we can do individually to improve things, and what’s likely to happen in the future.

In the English class that follows the podcast, as native English speakers use colours all the time in their every day speech, today we’re going to teach you some new and more unusual colours that you’ve probably not learnt before.

Conversación en ingles: Transporte y viajes

Empezamos esta conversación definiendo y explicando las diferencias entre ‘transport’ y ‘travel’ en inglés. Luego os damos una breve historia sobre los medios de transporte, indicando cuándo y dónde se inventaron algunos de ellos.

Luego pasamos a algunos datos estadísticos sobre los medios de transporte más populares en el mundo, y nos centramos en una comparación entre el Reino unido, España y varios países de América Latina. Aquí descubriréis: cuál es el país de Europa más seguro para conducir (Inglaterra o España), quién tiene el mayor número de motos en carretera, y qué país de Latinoamérica ocupa el tercer lugar en mayor número de aeropuertos, tras Estados Unidos y Brasil.

Por último comparamos Londres, Barcelona, Bangkok y Sydney en cuanto a congestiones de tráfico e iniciativas para el transporte, y acabamos hablando de algunas de nuestras experiencias preferidas en viajes.

Al final de la conversación hablamos del futuro del transporte, en especial los viajes al espacio, ¡y cuánto costará una plaza en el primer vuelo comercial al espacio el año que viene (2011) con Virgin Galactic!

TOM: We’re recording today from Mark’s flat, because it’s been raining a lot outside in Barcelona, and we’re in a flat very near to Sants station. So today we’re gonna talk all about Transport and Travel. There’s a slight difference; Transport is used to talk about a system of vehicles, such as buses, trains and aircraft for getting from one place to another, whereas Travel, very simply is the act of travelling or the movement of people between relatively distant[1] geographical locations for any purpose[2] and any duration, with or without any means of transport[3]…
MARK: We’ve travelled quite a lot and we’ve used quite a varied[4] means of transportation to do so in our time…
TOM: So can you now give us, Mark, a brief history of transport with the human race?
MARK: Well, using the definitions that Tom’s just provided, transport actually began with human migration, on foot in prehistory. Normally this was because they were following[5] food sources, and migrating animals, but the first proper transportation using any form of vehicle as we know it wer…be with the domestication of the horse. Now I read that this was first achieved[6] about six thousand years ago in the Ukraine, and after that chariots[7] were invented around four thousand years ago, which, a type of chariot would also be used in agriculture, and also, as we know chariot to be, helped in the art of warfare…
TOM: Can I interject[8]? Something was probably invented before the chariot was invented…
MARK: Ah…something that makes a chariot a chariot?
TOM: Exactly!
MARK: The wheel[9]…
TOM: Perfect! And when was that invented?

Sobre la Conversación en inglés…

We begin this English conversation by defining, and explaining the differences between ‘transport’ and ‘travel’ in English.
Next we give a brief history of transport – discussing when and where various modes of transport were invented.

We then look at some statistics about the most popular modes of transport around the world, then focus on a comparison between the UK, Spain and various Latin American countries. In this you’ll find out: which is the safest country in Europe to drive in (England or Spain), who has the most motorbikes on the road, and which country in Latin America has the third most airports in the world (after the USA and Brazil).

Finally we compare London, Barcelona, Bangkok and Sydney in terms of traffic congestion, and transport initiatives, before finishing off talking about some of our favourite ever travel experiences.

At the end of the conversation we talk about the future of transport, especially space travel, and how much it will cost to book a seat on the first commercial space flight next year (2011) with Virgin Galactic!

In the English class following the conversation, you’re going to learn some cool new vocabulary to describe the people you meet on your travels. These words are often called “character” or “personality adjectives” in English. As usual, we’re also going to teach you a couple of great colloquial words to help you sound really English!

En esta conversación real en inglés hablamos sobre salud y forma física. Empezando con una ojeada a las estadísticas actuales sobre salud en el mundo, tenemos una charla sobre los países con más y menos salud del mundo, con especial atención a la esperanza de vida en el Reino Unido, España y Latinoamérica, así como otros países.

TOM: Hi, my name’s Tom and I’m sitting on Bogatell beach with Mark. Hello Mark!
MARK: Hi Tom!
TOM: (We’ve) come down to the beach today, it’s the Festival of the Merced[1] in Barcelona, it’s the 24th of September…
MARK: Yep, and it’s five years to the day since I arrived in Spain…
TOM: Ah, congratulations!
MARK: Thank you very much!
TOM: Today, we’re gonna talk all about Health and Fitness. Now, the World Health Organisation[2] definition of health is ‘a state[1] of complete physical, mental and social well-being[4] and not merely the absence of disease[5] or infirmity[6]’, so today we’re gonna look at the state of the world’s health, and Mark, ‘fitness’? What is fitness all about?
MARK: Well, the definition of fitness is ‘the state of being physically active on a regular basis to maintain good physical condition’ so basically, fitness is more concerned with physical well-being, and health incorporates physical and mental…
TOM: OK, so in the world, some of the healthiest countries are what?
MARK: I’d say Japan, South Korea, Switzerland[7]…
TOM: Iceland, Sweden[8] and Finland as well…
MARK: Really?
TOM: Spain does quite well, it comes in at 14th. Umm…why do you think those countries are the healthiest?
MARK: I guess it’s probably the diet, because I know in Japan people have long life expectancy[9] because their diet is very low in fat[10]; they eat lots of rice[11], they eat lots of fresh fish, and I guess in Scandinavia it’s similar…

In this real English conversation we talk all about health and fitness. Beginning with a look at current health statistics around the world, we have a discussion about which are the healthiest and unhealthiest countries in the world – looking especially at life expectancy rates in the UK, Spain and Latin America as well as other countries.

We move on to discuss health trends, and whether the world – as it becomes more ‘developed’ – is becoming more or less healthy. Following this we talk about the principal causes of ill health in the modern world, including some incredible figures about obesity rates.

Other topics covered in the conversation include the following:

• Different types of exercise, and which forms are most popular in various countries,
• Getting fit and ways to improve fitness,
• Exercise statistics around the world – find out who does the most exercise, and the least!

We finish off by discussing various government health initiatives, and the impact the British chef Jamie Oliver has had on dietary habits in the UK. Finally, we reveal how much the US weight-loss industry is worth a year, before going off to buy ourselves a juicy hamburger in Barcelona!

In the English class that follows the conversation, we’re going to teach you some useful English vocabulary to talk about going to the gym and doing exercise.

La inmigración es un tema candente en España. Recientemente el Partido Popular (PP, el principal partido de la oposición al gobierno) sacó un videojuego en su página web. En el juego, Alicia Sánchez-Camacho, la presidenta del PP Cataluña, aparece a lomos de una gaviota blanca llamada Pepe. En el juego consigue puntos al lanzar bombas a inmigrantes ilegales y a símbolos nacionalistas catalanes. Qué amable.

Mark y yo somos los dos emigrantes e inmigrantes desde el Reino Unido a España, y en este podcast conversamos sobre la inmigración en el mundo. Empezamos hablando sobre algunos de los datos estadísticos actuales sobre inmigración en el mundo, y luego explicamos la historia en general de la inmigración y emigración.

Más adelante nos centramos sobre la situación actual de la inmigración en el Reino Unido y España, hablando de algunos de los datos estadísticos sobre inmigración, y de los principales países de los que la gente emigra antes de llegar a estos países para empezar una nueva vida.

España en especial ha tenido una enorme oleada de inmigración en la última década más o menos, y la conversación incluye algunas opiniones sobre el cambio de las actitudes de la población hacia la inmigración aquí (y en el Reino Unido), y algunos de los problemas con los que se encuentran los inmigrantes al empezar una vida en un país nuevo.

Tras la conversación hay una clase de vocabulario de 5 minutos con la que aprenderéis algunas palabras coloquiales muy comunes para describir sentimientos y emociones (sobretodo en negativo).

TOM: Hello!
MARK: Right, today, we’re recording from my flat in Barcelona, relatively near Sants train station, and today we’re going to speak about immigration…
TOM: Yes, Mark and I are both immigrants[1] and emigrants[2]…
MARK: That’s right…
TOM: As is about three percent of the world’s population, and we are also known as expatriates[3], or expats, aren’t we?
MARK: We are…
TOM: So, an immigrant, firstly, to define it, is a person who has come to a different country in order to live there permanently, and an emigrant…i…is a person who has left a country permanently, to go and live in another one…
MARK: So, Tom and I are emigrants, because we’ve left the UK, and we’re immigrants because we’ve chosen to live in Spain…
TOM: Yep, and according to the United Nations, there are more than two hundred million migrants around the world today, so we’re not alone…
MARK: No….
TOM: So we’re not alone leaving our fatherland[4]…
MARK: There’s a few of us…
TOM: Exactly, and that’s been a…there’s been a huge increase of thirty seven percent in the last two decades, so the world’s population has become a lot more mobile…[Mark interrupts, yep] I would say…What are some of the areas you think, that have the highest levels of immigrants, Mark?

Sobre la Conversación en inglés…

Immigration is a HOT topic in Spain! Recently the PP (the main opposition party to government) released a video game on its website. In the game, Alicia Sanchez-Camacho – the president of the PP branch in Catalonia – is depicted riding a white seagull called Pepe. In the game she gets points by directing the bird to bomb illegal immigrants and symbols of Catalan nationalism. How friendly.

Mark and I are both emigrants and immigrants having emigrated from the UK to Spain, and in this podcast, we have a conversation about immigration around the world. We start off by discussing some of the present day immigration statistics around the world, before looking at a global history of immigration & emigration.

We then focus on the current immigration situation in the UK and Spain, discussing some of the immigration statistics, and looking at the main countries people are emigrating from before arriving to start a new life in both countries.

Spain in particular has had a huge level of immigration in the last decade or so, and the conversation includes some thoughts on changing public attitudes towards immigration here (and in the UK), and some of the problems immigrants face when starting life in a new country.

Following the conversation there’s a 5 minute vocabulary class about the vocabulary of feelings and emotions where you’ll learn some very common and colloquial words to describe (mostly negative) feelings and emotions.
